It is with deep sadness, that on Friday 31st July Monty Roberts, died aged 91.

To the rest of the world he was known as the Horse Whisperer in the never changing famous blue shirt,  but to all his instructors he was also a mentor and friend.

I have had the privilege of getting to know him, working and living side by side at the California Horse Centre for 15 years, where he imparted his knowledge, wisdom and unparalleled “feel” for a horse with his unique sense of humour and stories. When I set off on my path of becoming a horse trainer, I never aimed to be an instructor, it just kind of happened and I still clearly remember the day he offered me the opportunity to stay at the farm and learn, not just about horses, but myself too.

Over the years he and his family treated me like part of the farm family for which I am very grateful. I was at the farm earlier this year and despite his advanced age, he was still entertaining the students with his stories and answering all the questions they had.

I have spent my career helping thousands of horses all over the world, and no matter what the “problem” was, I have never encountered a horse who proved Monty wrong with his view that whatever the issue, from the horses point of view it’s always a “people problem”.

His philosophy of complete non-violent horse training, trust based partnerships and his lifetime of knowledge now belongs to us, his instructors, and I will continue to teach and train horses to my best ability to continue Monty’s philosophy into the future to reach as many people as possible,  and whilst I will no longer see him in the famous round pen, every time someone chooses understanding over intimidation, partnership over dominance, and kindness over force, his life’s work continues.

I look forward to being back at his home in October to continue his lessons to the next generation of horse trainers and owners and my thoughts and condolences go out to his immediate family especially Pat and Debbie, and to all of my extended family at the farm.

One of the hardest posts I’ve had to write, and still struggling to find the way to go, but bear with me…

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we have had to say our last good-byes to Fox, who has sadly passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly. 

For the 100’s of students, clients (and the odd celebrity here and there!) and everyone that met him he was more often than not,  peoples “favourite” character at the farm. Soft, gentle, patient, approachable, loved a fuss and attention…. If you worked with him on a course or lesson you’ll know how good a teacher he was, in letting you discover how you, the human need to learn how every look, gesture, movement you make means something to a horse, and teaches them something whether you realise it or not. Your horse is your mirror….

On a much more personal level, he was all of those things and very much more to the people that knew him best, because he certainly didn’t start out that way… he came to us broken both physically & (almost) mentally, by a succession of people who think that ever increasing levels of violence, brute force, fear and sheer cruelty is the answer and yet have the gall to call themselves “trainers” or a “horse person”, rather than just admit you have zero ideas of what to do because YOUR usual one way of doing something isn’t working, blame the horse, it’s much easier,  definitely much easier than realising you have NO idea of how a horse works and thinks.

Well guess what, it didn’t work.. He beat you.

By working him the way HE works, how every horse works and thinks, we ended up with our Mr Fox, and no, it wasn’t easy, he was one of the “hardest” horses i’ve worked in 25 years, because of what had been created before we got him… he taught me more in the first few months than any horse ever has and never really stopped…I had the joy of knowing him and being part of his gang for 14 more years…. all I did was listen, learn and guide him back to being the horse he always was and was meant to be. The soft, gentle, patient, approachable, trusting, kind, forgiving, loyal, cheeky, playful, intelligent, graceful, beautiful, my horse shaped shadow… my “baby boy” Foxy.

He is 1 of only 6 global instructors forming the senior Instructors Executive Committee & Monty has licensed him  to teach the all courses & advanced courses at Flag Is Up Farms, California & worldwide as well as the Horse sense and Healing program for veterans and first responders.
